The Shield of Faith: Our Defense Against Spiritual Attacks
Ephesians 6:16
In the spiritual battlefield of life, we often find ourselves under assault from unseen forces. Just as ancient soldiers relied on their shields for protection, we too have a powerful defense against the enemy's attacks - the shield of faith.
Imagine a scene from the Fifth Crusade in 1221. Christian knights, vastly outnumbered, face a barrage of flaming arrows raining down upon them. The sky appears ablaze with falling stars as these fiery missiles descend. Yet, the soldiers stand firm, crouching behind their massive wooden shields soaked in water and covered in rawhide. These shields prove impenetrable, extinguishing the flames and absorbing the arrows' impact.
While we may never face such a literal battle, as Christians, we live in a spiritual war zone every day. The Christian life isn't a leisurely stroll through the park; it's a grueling fight in the trenches. Our adversary, Satan, has his arrows aimed squarely at us, and mere willpower or wit won't suffice to overcome his attacks. We need the shield of faith.
The apostle Paul, writing to the Ephesians, instructs us to "take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one" (Ephesians 6:16). This shield represents our active trust in God's promises, His character, and His Word.
Satan's tactics are cunning and diverse. He fires "flaming arrows" of temptation, doubt, fear, discouragement, and intrusive thoughts. These arrows are designed to pierce our defenses and set our hearts ablaze with sin, doubt, or despair. One of his most potent weapons is discontentment - magnifying what we lack rather than celebrating God's blessings in our lives.
Consider how Satan targeted Eve in the Garden of Eden. Instead of appreciating the abundance of trees she could enjoy, he focused her attention on the one forbidden fruit. This strategy of cultivating discontentment hasn't changed. Satan still whispers that we're missing out, that God is withholding good things from us, or that we deserve more.
So how do we combat these fiery darts? We must actively take up our shield of faith daily. Here are some practical ways to do this:
1. Know the Word of God: Faith isn't self-generated; it's nourished by Scripture. We must saturate our minds with God's truth through consistent Bible study, church attendance, and meditation on His Word.
2. Actively choose to trust God: In every circumstance, make a conscious decision to rely on God's promises rather than succumbing to fear or doubt.
3. Speak God's promises: When Satan fires his lies, respond with truth. For every accusation, there's a promise in God's Word to counter it. For instance:
- When Satan says, "God has abandoned you," hold up the shield that declares, "He will never leave me nor forsake me" (Hebrews 13:5).
- If the enemy whispers, "You're too sinful to be forgiven," remember 1 John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us."
- When doubt creeps in about your spiritual progress, cling to Philippians 1:6 - "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion."
4. Stand together with other believers: The Roman army's "testudo" formation, where soldiers interlocked their shields to form an impenetrable barrier, illustrates the power of unity in faith. We are strongest when we stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow believers, encouraging one another and holding fast to our shared faith.
The Psalms provide beautiful examples of this shield of faith in action. Time and again, we see the psalmists pouring out their hearts to God in times of distress, only to end in praise and renewed trust. They rehearse God's character, remember His past faithfulness, and choose to rely on His promises even when circumstances seem dire.
Consider the words of Psalm 18:2 - "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Here, the psalmist paints a vivid picture of God as our ultimate protection and source of strength.
Jesus Himself modeled the use of this shield when tempted in the wilderness. To every enticement Satan presented, Christ responded with "It is written," wielding the sword of the Spirit (God's Word) in conjunction with the shield of faith.
An ancient Spartan custom underscores the critical nature of the shield in battle. Spartan mothers, sending their sons off to war, would admonish them: "Come back with your shield or on it." To return without one's shield was considered the ultimate disgrace - not just because it meant potential death, but because it endangered one's fellow soldiers. The shield wasn't merely for personal protection; it was integral to the entire army's defense.
Similarly, our faith isn't just for our own benefit. When we stand firm in faith, we encourage and protect those around us. Our unwavering trust in God's promises can be a beacon of hope to fellow believers struggling with doubt or fear.
In the end, we don't lay down our shield of faith until we stand before the King of Kings, when faith gives way to sight. Until that glorious day, we must hold fast to our shield, trusting in the promises of God, the power of Christ's sacrifice, and the certainty of our eternal hope.
As we face the daily barrage of the enemy's attacks, let's remember that our God is greater than any force that comes against us. His Word is true, His promises are sure, and His love is unfailing. By taking up the shield of faith, we not only protect ourselves but also stand as a testimony to God's faithfulness in a world desperately in need of hope.
So today, whatever battles you face, whatever doubts assail you, whatever temptations lure you - hold up your shield. Choose to trust in the God who has never failed, whose love never wavers, and whose power knows no limits. In Him, we find our refuge, our strength, and our victory.
